Construction is well underway on Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy: A Challenge Foundation Academy with exterior walls, windows and atriums in place. The floor has been poured and roof was installed in early October. This timeline should result in an enclosed building that will allow all further interior work to progress uninterrupted throughout the winter.

The project is on time at this point and there are no serious budget overruns. An additional $10,000 was approved to expand the scope of the retaining wall that stands between the school and the apartments. It was determined that there is a requirement that the wall run longer and a bit higher than was originally planned. The only other significant budget issue was the discovery of over 500 feet of buried asbestos water pipe that ran from the old water tower to the property line. This was discovered early in the grading process and was removed and disposed of in a HAZMAT landfill in Charlotte at a cost of approximately $25,000.

The J.S. Clark team has been very communicative with Challenge Foundation representatives as well as city inspectors and representatives of the Thomas Jefferson Board. By all accounts, we’re on time, on budget, progressing well on all fronts with no red flags in sight. Great job, J.S. Clark!
